Clay Shirky states in Here Comes Everybody that the increases in power and flexibility of technology “will have more good effects than bad ones” (296). It is true that technology can do great good, but despite the positive effects, it can be and is used for malicious and amoral purposes. Technology enables us to easily share truths and perform research. It also can simply act as a distraction. While you can use these technological advances to easily research your family history, you can also just as easily use them to stare at cat pictures. In the end it is up to each of us to decide how to use this technology. So I disagree with Shirky’s statement. The results of technological advances are up to us. If we choose to use them responsibly, then it will have more positive effects than bad, but if we choose to use this technology irresponsibly, then the it will have more negative effects than good.
