In Here Comes Everybody by Clay Shirky, Shirky talks about the power of social networks, social sharing, and social media to create organizations and groups. He talks about the great power of this technology; his language and tone make it clear that he considers this new technology to be good and helpful. Only briefly does he talk about the negative aspects of these outlets (caveat, I’ve only read the first 30 pages). While these technologies can do great good, they also foster a negative element. People can also use these outlets to harm others. This may range from the impolite to the malicious. Some may do it out of ignorance, maliciousness, or due to the anonymity they feel. Regardless, everybody who uses this technology has a responsibility to monitor themselves and make sure that they are doing what is ethical.
